All things can be created; one must but wield the skill. Amitar the blind forgemaster so adept at creation that he can feel the outcome of his creations before their completion. He is the one who brought craftsmanship to the races of Talerand. It is said that while forging the hooks for Shamara to hang her stars in the sky Amitar reached his hands into the rivers of Talerand to quench the heated metal but his hand was brushed by a herd of cattle moving through the river. Though he could not see them, he wished to create them though as much as he tried he could not create the soft hide or beating heart of the creatures. In frustration he screamed out to know why his hands had failed him and was answered by Luirim and Carzughaz. Luirim offered the understanding of what living things were and introduced Amitar to the humanoids who were primitive but had hands in which to create, and Carzughaz explained the mortality of the living which gave them ambition before death. With this knowledge Amitar imparted upon the races the means to craft with iron and fire. While he could not see the outcome he could hear the bustle of the cities built with the knowledge imparted and this continues to please Amitar to this day.
Within the Pillars of Existence lied a being of deific power, but with no domain to call his own. Arulaz pondered long on his place in the cosmos, but when the oceans and lakes and rivers of Talerand were formed by Mulvarav, his purpose discovered him. Ancient foreigners approached the lost deity and offered him a deal, granting them access to Talerand, where they could feast upon its inhabitants, in exchange for aid in becoming the most powerful god by killing the rest of them. The thought of betraying his fellow gods excited him, and suddenly he realized his purpose, his domain: Treachery. He granted the aberrations access to Talerand as promised, and devastation followed. As death tolled for those not yet meant to die, the decidedly neutral Yaro cut Arulaz's thread of fate and in response Carzughaz crushed the betrayer's heart. Arulaz's godly form died but when Yasifein went to collect his soul, it could not be found. Arulaz's divine essence lives on within Talerand, evading the judgement of his fellow gods while invoking treachery within the hearts of mortals.
Breivt is in each step a soldier makes marching towards war. Whether for power, country, or honor Breivt does not care, for it is in the heat of battle that it draws strength. Without conflict there is no need to improve, and complacency will stifle the progress of mortals. This mindset is in direct conflict with Naaldine to which the two are at insurmountable odds. During wartime it is said that Breivt pulls at the hearts of men like gravity, leading men to be more grounded and instinctual while when during peace time Naaldin is said to lift the hearts of men to higher thinking. Breivt goes by many names and occupies two spheres within his own domain; these names are Phalanx & Trivod, depending on the region, and are alternate names for him when referred to for purposes of honor or country while those who would bathe in the blood of their enemies or for conquest call him Kalavad & Sheine. Regardless it is the same entity and the motives of Breivt are solely dictated by the cause of the occurring conflict. Breivt being susceptible to the changes in cause of war also has had a fair share of influence from the other gods, most notably when Sarcgheel influenced him to create the War of the Arisen when the undead legions were given the discipline of war and rampaged through Talerand both on land and undersea. This was only stopped when Yasifein's burden became too great and she cast away the unlife from the main legions force and buried them in a desolate land known as the Crawling Hills. Some roaming members of this legion still exist to this day as a mark of this time.
It is said when a baby is born, so too is the God of Death made anew, with the child's pounding heart in his hand. Each Carzughaz patiently awaits on an isolated dimensional pocket below the Tundra of the Lost 'til the moment his ward is to die, crushing the beating heart and ending the life of both himself and his ward.
With the formation of the Warforged, and other inorganic beings, the process of life and death introduced by the Pillars of Existence no longer applied to all creatures of Talerand. There was no thread pulled from Luirim's dress, nor heart to be crushed by Carzughaz and chaos began to spread from this unexpected event. To keep the order balanced, Furlor presented an Elder Tree to Luirim who then breathed new life into it, creating another Pillar of Existence: Dardarel. This new godly being brought order to the world once more, not only dictating the destinies of the Warforged but also brining law and order to the sentient beings of Talerand. Bored with the predictability of the world, Filadere stole the Scroll of Divine Order. During the cosmic chase that followed, Yaro plucked from Filadere's hand, the Scroll of Divine Order, forming new threads from its parchment so that he may weave the fates of the Warforged. The Scroll was then returned to its rightful master, Dardarel, asked that Amitar craft golden chains to affix the scroll to itself, so that it could never be stolen again.
Mastering manipulation is an art form of its own and no other creature is more adept than Filadere. Her antics have earned her the disdain for many of her fellow diety's. In one such case Filadere coveted Amitar's hammer as she believed it would allow her to create the artifacts of the other gods for herself. She approached Amitar disguised as Luirim and requested he create another hammer for which she would bestow her venerators with items that would help them live more fruitful lives. Amitar declined stating that he could not impart such a precious item, even a copy to her regardless of their friendship. In response, Filadere accepted this explanation but requested instead if she could borrow it so that at the very least one of her followers could gain an item of favor that she had created herself even if her skill couldn't match his. Amitar fell into this lie as the pride of his work was being acknowledged by one of his kin. He granted her the use of the hammer for 1 day but warned that it must be returned, or the hammer would begin to break her down into her core components. With hammer in tow, she rushed to Luirim and asked her if she could observe the mortals alongside her. Luirim was suspicious but allowed her to do so by the light of Shamara. While gazing down at the mortals Filadere created a small powder with the hammer and blew it towards Luirim making her grow tired. When Luirim left to sleep Filadere stole some of the stars infused with her essence and attempted to hammer it into a living being. This created the Golems, Warforged, and constructs which lacked true life but an amalgamation of craft of sentience. When Luirim woke she looked down at her mortals who were now attempting to create their own constructs. Infuriated she confronted Amitar who declined creating them but told her that she had borrowed the hammer and she must be responsible. They both then realized what had happened and sought out Filadere.
When they found her, she was swinging from one of the hooks meant to hold up the stars but sat just out of reach refusing to come down. When they finally looked down back at Talerand the removed star had fallen and begun to orbit the earth but had lost it luminous glow. Luirim was angered by this sacrilege but could do nothing as Filadere laughed and laughed. She only stopped laughing when Luirim decided to take away the joy of the trickster by naming the fallen star moon and caring for it herself. She would impart a portion of the light from her sun so that it would glow once again. Worshipers of Filadere are typically rogues and charlatans who enjoy a good laugh at someone else's expense.
The prancing of faun in a meadow or the decay of a carcass that feeds a sapling, Furlor is the maintainer of balance in nature. Nature is neither good nor evil, kind nor harsh, but it always is. Many druids follow the teachings of Furlor and strive to maintain a balance in its name. It is said that long ago Furlor and its two siblings, Carzughaz & Luirim were pitted a competition to see who could maintain a realm that best represented the domains they control, the winner of which would gain control over the others' aspects. After a week they visited each other's realms and judged the outcome. Carzughaz realm had become desolate with no life in sight, laid completely barren but with no life there was no death. Luirim's realm had become vastly overpopulated and the creatures within were starved due to excessive competition. Furlor's realm however was perfectly in balance with both life and death, the dead feeding the living and the living feeding the inevitability of death. Furlor was unanimously declared the winner begrudgingly by both siblings. Once he possessed their powers, he willing gave them back to the sibilings saying that without each of them, balance would be impossible.
The lady of life watches over all living creatures in the realms. She gifts life by borrowing light from Shamara, infusing it with her own essence and casting it down to earth, for all creatures before seeing anything see simply a bright light when they emerge. It is said that she so loves these creatures that she uses the celestial bodies to illuminate so she can always observe the vibrancy of life whether by torch, sun, or stars. Shamara is a good friend of Luirim and the two often work together. The idea of murder is abhorrent to Luirim and when a life is snuffed out before its time you can sometimes see her rage as the moon turns red or the sun is blocked out. Luirim understands the necessity of death as part of her role within the "Pillars of Existence" but wishes all creatures to live their lives till their fated ends wholly. Undeath is act against life itself and clerics of Luirim seek out to destroy it in every corner it may appear.
The sea, calm one moment and churning with deadly intent the next.
At Luirim's request, Mulvarav created the oceans, seas and rivers to help sustain life on Talerand, but when the sentient creatures of the land began hunting those who dwelled within his waters, Sarcgheel seized the opportunity to corrupt the ocean god's mind. In his corrupted rage, Mulvarav created the Ocean's Maw to flood the world and only the combined efforts of Luirim, Furlor and Carzughaz could stop him. With Mulvarav subdued, Amitar created the God's Chain to bind the Ocean's Fury to the depths of the sea. It is said that when massive waves pummel the oceans, Mulvarav has broken free, but eventually the seas calm again as Amitar reforges the chains. While disaster was averted, with Mulvarav's fall to the corruption, Sarcgheel claimed an eternal anchor to Talerand.
Naaldine hovers within the Curved Horizon, promoting peace and tranquility to the inhabitants of Talerand. When peace is achieved, Naaldine lifts the hearts of men to higher thinking, resulting in new discoveries that feed the mind. After the War of the Arisen, brought on by Breivt, Naaldine trained mortals in the skills of the monk to spread his peaceful teachings, and when necessary, to halt violence by subduing any aggressors with gentle, fluid movements. While some monk enclaves continue the tradition of minimal force, others have since fallen for the intrigues of battle and war provided by Breivt.
The pursuit of knowledge is noble until it becomes an obsession. It is said that when that line is crossed, even those who are strong willed are tempted to act in ways that would be madness to most mortals. Temptations of eternal life through lichdom, access to power through knowledge of artifacts in the infernal planes, or consumption of sentient flesh or souls to bolster ones power are all acts that satisfy Sarcgheel as the corruption of the logical brings him the most power. Creatures who act on these impulses forfeit their bodies to Sarcgheel and are said to cause an additional appendage to grow from his chitinous body, each of which anchor him to each plane so that his corruption might spread.
Shamara dances through the cosmos, shedding light on the world in the form of the starlight in the night's sky. She is the comforting presence when darkness is at its strongest, granting guidance to those appreciative of her gifts. Shamara favors the Norolkin wizards who seek to obtain and understand her prophecies within Cirilliam.
Listen to the wind's whisper in your ear, lest Vruadorm choose a bolt of lightning to grab your attention.
Vruadorm flies through the clouds above, often paying little attention to the land below, as it guards the veil between Talerand and the celestial bodies beyond the sky. As its wings beat, the wind is created, spreading throughout the planet. However, Vruadorm serves a higher purpose, appointed by Shamara, the Star Dancer. When entities of the Far Realm threaten Talerand, Vruadorm hurls spears of lightning at the aggressing otherworldly creatures and in so doing, relatively harmless discharges of electrical energy descend upon Talerand, helping shape the earth.
Some accept it, some reject it and some grant it no thought, but all must follow the thread of their own fate.
When a creature is born, Yaro pulls a thread from Luirim's dress and weaves it into Fate, setting the creature on its path in life. The thread travels through the cosmos, illuminated by starlight where Shamara peers into the fates of every creature born of Luirim. Though freewill may twist and bend the threads in unexpected ways, they always end at the same place: spun to the back of Carzughaz.
When someone falls to Carzughaz and their beating heart lies still, the living must still push on. Yasifein helps guide the souls of dead to their afterlives, wherever they may be. The journey after death is still treacherous as many creatures vie for the souls as they cross the cold Tundra of the Lost and it is her duty to protect the departed until they reach their afterlife. As such, she also has set traditions on preparing the dead and while customs may change in different lands, they all credit Yasifein with the instruction. It is said that when she finally guides the departed, she collects the dropped string of fate to be returned to Yaro to fill his loom once again.
When Sarcgheel first came to Talerand, Zul'Zaer and he fought with their magics from beyond the Curved Horizon to the very Veil of the World. As the battle continued, pieces of their divine essence fell to Talerand, presenting the gift of the arcane, but also the corrupting allure of its power. Since its introduction, the arcane casters have faced the adversity of overcoming the desire for absolute power. Zul'Zaer helps guide those casters to a healthy use of magic to improve the lives of all, rather than Sarcgheel's push for corruption.
